Chevy should make the next ZR-1 with a LS7 based V10. Maybe SRT could learn somethin.

Except replace the OHV with an OHC.

And make it mid engined!

No, rear engined!

And diesel rotary!

With column shift! And a 7-door wagon!

Why? What value would that add?

Originally, the Viper was supposed to have an OHC setup by Lamborghini, but predictably, Chrysler didn't want to spend money on it. :/

That doesn't really answer my question. How would it make the engine better?

I'm sure you mean fortuitously they didn't want to spend the money. I can't imagine a DOHC Viper V-10 being very good or cheap or giving a very good car.

High revs?

Hey, look at what BMW, Audi/VW/Lamborghini/Porsche and Lexus did, heh. As well as Ford.

The LS7 already revs to 7k. I like a stratospheric redline as much as the next guy, but it's not worth reworking the engine and losing the excellent torque curve just to achieve one.

Yeah, they all made cars much more expensive and not much faster and far fewer of them. And none of them eight liters and front mounted. Of the dohc V-10's you listed, only BMW has dared put one of theirs in the front, and it's a 5.0l and came out 15 years later in a taller, slower car (slower than the viper from that year anyway) costing tens of thousands more.

Also, we're not talking about a company that has EVER made a supercar or been involved in any significant motorsport outside of ones using OHV V-8's. BMW races F1. Porsche and Audi have both built DOHC racecars for more than 50 years. Toyota has also won LeMans and happens to be the world's largest car manufacturer. As for Ford — their modular DOHC is a truck engine that has never made as much power as the original Viper V-10.

Soooo....let's just get at the meat of this, shall we? You're some punk kid who thinks that overhead cams have some magical properties that imbue them with the almighty hp/l "efficiency." The fact that an 8.4l v-8 with overhead cams would be significantly taller, heavier, and more expensive doesn't compute because DOHC is teh awesomz. The fact that the Viper V-10 pushrods are part of what makes it unique is lost in the one-dimensional thinking of youth.

Don't get me wrong — dual overhead cams are awesome. But they would diminish the Viper.
